FINAL PROCESSING of Diablo Canyon License Renewal DELAYED, but renewal process continues

PG&E has requested that only the final approval for the license renewal process be delayed until after the 3D seismic studies are complete. The license renewal process is to continue on schedule.

On April 11, 2011, Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) sent a letter to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) requesting “that the Commission delay the final processing of the [License Renewal Application] LRA such that the renewed operating licenses, if approved, would not be issued until after PG&E has completed the 3-D seismic studies and submitted a report to the NRC addressing the results of those studies.” PG&E states that the studies will be completed not later than December 2015.

In a follow-up letter dated April 12 to the Atomic Safety and Licensing Board, however, it became clear that PG&E has requested that only the final approval be delayed, and that the renewal process is to continue on schedule.  PG&E has NOT requested any suspension or delay in the license renewal application or the schedule for the licensing hearing process.
