SACRAMENTO – Very early this morning, the California legislature voted to pass a measure supported by Governor Gavin Newsom to extend the life of the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant.
Mothers for Peace issued the following statement:
“After battling to shut Diablo Canyon for over 40 years, tonight we are stunned by the decision of the California Legislature to approve Governor Newsom’s brazen proposal to keep Diablo operating past its agreed-upon closing date by 2025. In essence, this vote puts in jeopardy years of deliberate and careful planning to retire the twin reactors, providing a runway for clean, renewable energy. Further, this vote will cause financial pain to taxpayers and ratepayers, extends the ongoing fear of a seismic event, and exacerbates the environmental damage Diablo Canyon inflicts. Mothers for Peace will continue to fight to keep Diablo on track to close by 2025.”
We are grateful for every phone call and letter you sent to the legislators and your unwavering support in the collective effort to shut down Diablo Canyon by 2025. This vote does not mean we are giving up. In fact, we are more energized and determined than ever! We will persevere.
