Observe the NRC oral argument on May 22, 2024 regarding the Diablo Canyon license renewal proceeding.

The Atomic Safety and Licensing Board Panel will conduct a prehearing conference in Rockville, Maryland regarding the Diablo Canyon licensing proceeding on Wednesday, May 22 beginning at 10am PT.

On March 4, 2024, San Luis Obispo Mothers for Peace, Environmental Working Group, and Friends of the Earth filed a motion to intervene and a hearing request in PG&E’s application to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) which seeks to relicense Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant to operate for 20 more years. The groups also submitted an enforcement petition to NRC Commissioners seeking immediate closure of Diablo Canyon due to unacceptable, significant earthquake risks that recently came to light.  This May 22 meeting will hear arguments on the standing of and admissibility of the three contentions that were submitted.

Members of the public may observe this oral argument.

Listen only: Dial 301-576-2978 and enter the passcode 628 518 148 #

Take ACTION prior to the meeting by emailing the three administrative judges from the NRC’s Atomic Safety and Licensing Board Panel.

Tell them that you are opposed to the extended operation of Diablo Canyon because the risks are too high. The plant is old, Unit 1’s reactor pressure vessel is embrittled, and the facility is surrounded by a network of active earthquake faults.
